I recently bought some tickets to see Amy Winehouse in mid-September at the Wiltern. While I knew of her tendency to cancel gigs, I watched her perform, via streaming video, at Lollapalooza in Chicago less than 3 weeks ago--she was a tad late, but pulled of a stellar performance. She did seem a little
distracted when she sang 'Rehab' for the millionth time, but otherwise put on a spot on show, focused and intense--as can be seen here. She was in full glower during 'Back to Black'--except when the Chicago winds blew her dress up in her face, forcing her to giggle during the song's most serious moment. Little did I know that in the succeeding days she would blow off her concerts scheduled for Norway and Denmark that week, as she binged on a diet of drugs and booze, leading to an overdose. After a short stay in the hospital, she entered rehab with her husband, then left rehab; she later claimed she left rehab only to pick up some guitars--yet, as one British paper archly noted, one 'can only imagine the disappointment that Amy Winehouse and
Blake Fielder-Civil must have felt when they realized that there
weren't any guitars at all in the pub they spent most of their time in'. Soon, she re-entered rehab, only to again leave. And now she's splashed all over the news today, a bloody mess after a fight with her husband.
Oh, about those shows at the Wiltern? Ticketmaster kindly informed me that her upcoming American tour is canceled.
NME recently posted their favorite Amy Winehouse videos as sort of a solution her sudden disappearance from the concert stage. Here's one of those:
